What is the best way to pack a motorhome camper or campervan? You want to know the essential items you should have for your motorhome or camper? Below is a list that will help you decide what essential motorhome kit you should bring with you on your trip.
Motorhome Essentials: What do you actually require?
I know. It happens when you find a motorhome that you like and your wallet is open.
So. Much. Stuff.
It can sometimes be hard to find the right motorhome necessities and what ones are just…nice to have.
This is a list of essential things that you should have. These are the things that EVERY campervan and motorhome should have.
Some of these are vital for van life. Some are vital for safety.
Essential accessories for your motorhome
Hosepipe
For water tank filling, you need a pipe. We recommend at most 10-15m. A food-grade hose is preferred. While we prefer a proper, flat hose to one that is flat, a flat-hose is much easier to store.
You will also need connectors. We love the Hoselock connector and use brass adaptors in Europe for different sizes of taps. Make sure to have the connectors on hand! (I have lost so many across Europe-oops! The cap is genius! Just attach your hose, and wait until the tank fills up.
240V Electric Cable
You can use a 25m length of 240v electric cable. But don’t leave it untwisted when not in use. It could cause a fire. Spread it out outside your van. We don’t like it on a reel because it’s more convenient for storage and we don’t want to get lazy and keep it coiled up on the roll. That’s how fires begin! You can store it in your motorhome storage container, or in the garage.
Splitter will be a necessity as many campsites don’t have enough sockets. You will need a European adapter and a wall plug that is 240v.
Gas Bottle
You have the option of either exchangeable or refillable bottles. If you plan to stay in the UK for a long time, exchangeable bottles are the best option. Make sure to use a spanner to tighten/loosen the bottles. A standard size for bottles is 30mm. The cost of refillables is lower if you use them frequently. However, it’s becoming more difficult to find LPG in the UK. It’s much easier in Europe so we recommend them.
Fridge
Gas, talk about it. Get a 3-way fridge if you don’t already. It’s so convenient to be able to run on either gas, gas, or the leisure battery. You won’t regret it – this is an essential campervans parts & accessories.
Levelling chocks
It will only take one night to realize how unholy angles are before you start to believe that levelling chocks make motorhoming possible.
The Jumbo versions are much better than the smaller. For when they get wet, muddy or dirty, the storage bag can be very useful.
Mud Mats
Speaking of mud, how many times have you been stuck in mud while on holiday with your camper? It was not fun.
We wouldn’t have made it out without these mudmats, I’m sure. I joked that I didn’t really use them, but I was wrong! They are an essential accessory for any motorhome. !
Essential Motorhome Safety Kit
You will need a carbon monoxide detector if there is gas aboard. Also, a smoke alarm. Combining units are useful. Also, a fire blanket or extinguisher. We are INSISTENT on these items after the motorhome fire.
The following are other essential safety items:
You will need a spare bulb kit with fuses, First Aid Kit, Warning Triangle and basic toolskit. You will find most of these items in this roadside emergency kit, plus some extras.
Security is a key topic. To give you additional security and peace of mind, we also installed a motorhome-door lock.
Tyre Repair Kit
Although we don’t want to think about it, sometimes things go wrong. It’s often a flat tyre. Many motorhomes have a tyre repair kit, and a spare tire. You should make sure that it is suitable for large vehicles.
Sat Nav
A motorhome needs a proper satellite navigation system. No question about it. It is simply too big to be played with.
Motorhome Essentials- Wing-mirror protectors
These are some of the most valuable things you’ll ever purchase. They are well worth the money. There are short and long arm options available. Be sure to get the right one for you motorhome or camper.
Essential Accessories for Living in a Motorhome
There are many things you will need once you have started using your motorhome.
Toilet paper & toilet chemicals
Toilet paper that is branded as a motorhome toilet paper does not have to be expensive. Actually, you don’t need expensive’motorhome’ toilet paper.
However, we do recommend toilet chemicals. We tried several different types, including detergent tabs that didn’t stop the stench.
Bedding and mattress topper
Motorhome bedding should be comfortable. We don’t like sleeping bags. Instead, we prefer proper duvets to pillows. If you are looking for a restful night, a mattress topper will be a must.
Cleaning
You will spend more time in the motorhome than you should, so it will need to be cleaned. We have tested many different brands of 12v vacuum cleaners and found Dyson to be the most cost-effective. The one with 12v charging is the best. A small dustpan or brush is also needed to reach the corners.
Essential accessories for motorhomes: Cutlery and plates
There are many options. There is also melamine that is tough and can be dropped by accident. Both of these are great options, but Amazon offers a LOT more. Similar for cutlery, and motorhome cups.
Also, you don’t have to buy huge quantities of coffee mugs – just enough for one. Guests and people who might be invited to coffee can bring their own cups and plates.
Other essential accessories for motorhomes
These are just a few tips. If you plan to take your motorhome camping, make sure to switch as many interior lighting fixtures to LED as possible.
Make sure you buy a charger that can charge your phone/ipad using the 12v sockets located at the front.
