Sending Christmas greetings – Why do we do it?

Christmas can be a hilarious time of the year. Families gather together and try to not to get into arguments. This is when we offer gifts of kindness and not only to take gifts. It’s also when people recognize that Jesus was born. Jesus Christ. Pantomimes are filled with joyous Christmas spirit. They are the time when our hearts are filled with soppy films filled with message of optimism and healing. The Queen of England offers a gesture of appreciation to those living in Britain…

Christmas is celebrated with the feeling of joy, which is always a good thing particularly after the snuff of Snowballs. However, sometimes, particularly following Dad’s worst christmas cracker gag, we’re completely in awe. To ensure that you don’t run out words for this holiday season We’ve put together the things you should put on Christmas cards – take a look!

Sending Christmas greetings – Why do we do it?

It dates back many years, back up to 1534, in actual. About 500 years ago, the first documented usage of the phrase ‘Merry christmas” was written on an yuletide message. In 1611, James I of England sent an ‘Christmas card’ that was more of an ornamental manuscript that contained an image of a rose along with four poems and a tune far greater than the usual xmas card we currently send!

The practice to send Christmas greeting cards like we do to be today, was introduced within the UK in 1843 by Sir Henry Cole. He was a Government employee who helped establish the new ‘Public Record Office or Post Office’ as it is called as of today. He wanted the vehicles to be accessible to all individuals, regardless of financial status or social standing and he teamed up with his friend and artist John Horsley. They came up with a card, that was sold for one Shilling, or approximately 5p in modern dollars. The card was three-panelled and featured an image of people helping those in need on either side, with an entire family enjoying Christmas food with a Christmas feast in the middle. The advertising for Christmas cards was rather dull in the past and featured a slogan of:

“Just released”, a Christmas Greetings Card or picture that represents the essence of an old English holiday to keep the good memories of dear friends”!
