Installation costs for boilers vary greatly depending on how much work you need, which parts you require, availability, and even where your home is located.
Find out what you can expect to spend on a new boiler installation.
Cost of a new boiler
The price of a new boiler depends on:
Type
The brand/model. While there are many models from different brands, some brands tend to be more affordable. The most important thing when choosing a boiler brand is reliability. It will save you time and money in the long-term.
The size of the boiler In kilowatts, the more expensive it is.
We have provided a table below that will give you an idea about current boiler prices. It shows what you can expect to pay for different types of boilers.
Prices for a boiler will vary depending upon the model, the size of the boiler and what your engineer can charge. However, this analysis should give an indication of average costs. Get the latest price and offers from your boiler manufacturer by calling us.
Installing a boiler is expensive
The price of installation includes the cost of the boiler, labor, and any other extras that you might want.
Costs will vary depending on how much work is required to fit the boiler. If the engineer has to modify the location or pipework, expect to pay higher labor costs.
When you get a new boiler installed, make sure to clean your heating system. This will ensure that your heating system works efficiently. There are several ways to clean your heating system. A power flush is used to clean heavily sludged heating systems. It costs between PS300 and PS750 for five-radiator systems. The average cost is PS481 (based off quotes from 24 Which). A magnetic filter is a great option to add to your heating system. Even after the heating engineer has gone, a filter keeps your heating system clear of gunk. Magnetic filters are available for purchase at prices between PS80 to PS130.
Thermostatic radiator vales (TRVs) can be an effective way of keeping your system balanced and the room temperature comfortable. When used correctly, they can help reduce heating bills as they prevent rooms that aren’t used often from overheating. They are around PS15 each, and one radiator will need them.
Smart thermostats and/or smart radiators are also worth considering. These devices allow you to remotely manage your heating via a smartphone or tablet and set heating schedules.
Prices of new boiler quote will vary depending upon the brand and features. However, you can usually expect to pay between PS100-PS250 for a Smart thermostat and PS35-PS80 for a Smart Radiator Valve.
Delta-EE has done an independent analysis for the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy. This included a cost analysis of heating measures. This analysis examined various boiler installation scenarios and provided a report on the typical costs.
A larger gas supply line may need to be installed between the gasmeter and the boiler for larger boilers (over 30kW). This will ensure that there is not too much pressure drop. You may need to pay between PS100-PS300 for a larger gas supply line if you want to replace a boiler less than 30kW with one more than 30kW.
The cost of replacing a heat only or system boiler by a combi model is typically between PS300 and PS650.2.
You will need to replace a combi boiler by installing a hot water water cylinder. The cost of a vented cylinder, which connects to a cold tank, can be between PS300 and PS600. An unvented cylinder connects directly to the mains. Its size and insulation will determine the price.
The rule of thumb is that if you are swapping like-for-like, the overall cost will be lower than if your boiler is being changed or relocated.
Costs for installing a combi boiler
For smaller homes and apartments with one bathroom, combi boilers are a great choice. A combi boiler heats water only when it’s needed.
Installing a heat-only boiler is expensive
For heat-only boilers (or regular boilers), you will need a hot water tube, usually located in an airing closet, and a cold water feed container, typically located in the loft. They are most suitable for larger homes because of the two tanks.
They can produce large quantities of hot water, which is ideal for households with multiple bathrooms and/or large families.
A hot water cylinder can be purchased for between PS300 and PS600 depending on the capacity.
We combined the BEIS 2020 data for labor costs and fittings with our boiler pricing to give you an estimate of the price you should pay for different combi boiler installation types.
Installing a system boiler costs
A system boiler operates just like a regular boiler. However, it does not require a large cold water tank. The hot water cylinder required to operate a system boiler must be unvented (sometimes called closed vent or sealed). These cylinders are typically priced at PS900 for a low-capacity, poorly insulated cylinder and up to PS1,300 if one with a greater capacity and is highly insulated (BEIS report for 2020).
Oil boiler installations
Installing the following oil systems should only be done by a qualified professional.
An oil-fired burning appliance that has a heat output less than 100kW. It is intended to be installed in a house or building of no more than 3 storeys.
Oil storage tanks and pipes connecting them with combustion appliances
Connected to an oil-fired burning appliance, heating or hot water service systems can be used for heating and/or cooling.
Similar to gas boilers, lower installation costs can be expected if you swap your oil boiler for one that is similar. Costs will rise if you have to swap the type of boiler or relocate your existing oil boiler.
A small oil store may be required, along with the piping to connect it to the boiler. Smaller oil stores work well for smaller boilers, and houses with easy access to oil supplies. They typically cost around PS1,300. A larger oil store will be required if your home is equipped with an oil boiler or in remote locations where you need a bigger store to keep fuel supplies. This will typically cost you around PS2,400 (BEIS report 2020).
Why is a reliable boiler important?
It depends on which part is defective, an average boiler repair cost of PS200 will cost. This doesn’t include the inconvenience of being without hot water or heating for days.
